Re: The 64-cup
hello all,
next match has been a rather exciting one; with the Mephisto Europa A giving sort of a lesson to the Tiger Grenadier, which can feel very lucky with a shared score. As far as hardware is concerned, it is a very modest 6301Y with 2 actual Mhz facing a powerful SH7034 @20Mhz (that's 13.7 times faster according to my estimation!) As often, the Grenadier chooses rather unusal openings, but funny enough is out of its book sooner than the Europa - and this is true in both games! ![]() During the first game as White, the small Morsch program plays better chess than the Donninger's one. I am not a strong player but I could immediately spot some odd moves from the Grenadier - no need for any deep analysis to tag them as questionable. The Grenadier only saves itself ![]() In the second game with opposite castlings, both devices prepare attacking the opponent King's corner, the Grenadier can push forward three linked Pawns whilst the Europa A is faster with one single storming Pawn the Grenadier failed to consider dangerous enough. As soon as move 34 the King of the Grenadier is disloged from its corner and threatened by no less than two Rooks, a Queen and two Bishops... that could have mate in 4. That's a bit deep for the Europa, so the fight will last much longer, nevertheless ending in a win for the small device. ![]()

Re: The 64-cup
Hi,
to complete group 4 matches, Millenium Chess Genius Pro plays with Mephisto Milano v2.00. With close to 300 CElo points in favor of the CGP, the Milano doesn't stand much chance and loses both games. At least, it is able to resign, so there is no need to play to the bitter end.

Re: The 64-cup
Hi,
we now can have a look to the group 4 tournament table: Code:
1. Millenium Chess Genius Pro (lv 15s) 6 points 2. Mephisto Milano v2.00/N. Short (lv T40/10) 4 points 3. Tiger Grenadier (tibono setting lv 15s avg) 3 points, S/B 8.0 4. Mephisto Europa A (lv a3) 3 points, S/B 7.0 5. Novag Carnelian II (lv we4) 2.5 points, S/B 5.5 6. Stadlbauer Maestro Schachprofessor (lv h4) 2.5 points, S/B 4.0 7. VEB RFT Chess-Master Diamond + PM11 (lv 2) 2 points 8. Mephisto I-X (lv a3) 1 point And now let me introduce group 5, where the CT800 v1.42 is the seeded player: - Mephisto Solar King - Novag Chess Champion Chess Partner 2000 - Novag Chess Champion MK1 - Mephisto Maestro Travel - Applied Concept Sargon 2.5 - Novag Constellation 3,6/Quattro - CT800 1.42 - Yeno 532XL As far as the average CElo is concerned, that's the weakest group in this competition... I already fear handling the MK1, I shall need to focus a lot! Stay tuned, Tibono |

Re: The 64-cup
Good morning all,
first match in group 5 is expected to provide weak chess games: Novag Chess Champion Chess Partner 2000 vs Mephisto Solar King. The CP2000 is a bit of a hassle to handle it: tough contacts, need to keyin twice on captures, need to confirm moves with the Enter key. Furthermore, you must not use this Enter key after keying in the computer moves, otherwise it changes color, and moves. In a nutshell, a pain in the neck... About the Solar King: I use the "turbo" mode which means powered with batteries rather than light. Light works, of course, but in this mode the device is intolerably slow and weak (the clock pace is dramatically slowed down to save energy). In the first game (CP2000 plays as White) the lead switches several times from one computer to the other, along with the most significant mistakes ![]() In the revenge game, 16 moves are enough to toggle the game in favor of the CP2000. Shared score, one point each.

Re: The 64-cup
Hello,
A bit of a surprise playing the second match in group 5, round 1: Novag Chess Champion MK1 vs Mephisto Maestro Travel. Of course the surprise is not blowing in the score: two points for the Maestro Travel, no worries. Who would have thought the MK1 would grasp any semipoint or more? No, the surprise is the MK1 could proudly stand 28 moves on par with the Maestro Travel, in its first game as White. Even then, the mistake it commits is a positional one, quite obvious for a human player, not so much for a weak program. And the Maestro Travel will still need 10 moves or so to get a strong material advantage... Good job, little MK1! On another hand, if playing with the CP2000 is a pain in the neck, doing so with the MK1 as White is a pain in the a$$ ![]() The second game is much much comfortable: at first, playing the MK1 as Black is straightforward, you just need to focus on the input to avoid potential mess, as there is no control. And the second reason is the game only lasted 16 moves, the MK1 being thoroughly overwhelmed by an early attack from the Maestro Travel.

Re: The 64-cup
Hi,
as the meteo is not great around Paris, France, I could play more games than usual. Here are the next ones: Applied Concept Sargon 2.5 vs Novag Constellation 3,6/Quattro. The later means my device is equiped with a Quattro ROM, which appears to be one of the configurations built and sold by Novag, most probably close to the end of life of the Constellation 3,6 device. Unfortunately, the combination results in a shifted clock/levels managements; level 2 is close to 20-25 secs/move therefore too slow for my standard pace (15 secs/m); and the 3,6 Quattro must climb down to level 1 which is significantly faster. At least it can ponder and use more time awaiting its opponent... According to relative strengths, the Sargon 2.5 could hope for half a point from this match, but it didn't happen. In the first game as White, Sargon 2.5 can't do much, a short game already pretty decided around move number 15. In the second game, Sargon 2.5 blunders as soon as move number 10; but the Constellation 3,6/Quattro needed many moves to achieve this win.

Re: The 64-cup
Guten Tag Alle,
the top match in this group occurs as soon as round 1 (the initial matches are defined randomly; next rounds are of course organized according to the scores, as the selection phase uses a Swiss tournament mode). That is CT800 1.42 vs Yeno 532XL. OK, the Yeno is the second best in this group, but roughly 450 CElo less is an overwhelming disadvantage. Despite being a rather strong fighter, the 532XL didn't stand a foot on the ground. ![]() Some additional information about the CT800 settings: - speed is 100% (default, no overclocking) - level 15 secs/move is not available with the 1.42 version I own; therefore I use the GMI mode (game in) with 5 minutes for the game plus 10 secs per move. That's 300+600 = 900 secs for 60 moves = 15 secs/move granted for the first batch of 60 moves. Should the game last longer, the average time/move of course decreases but no less than 10 secs per move.

AW: The 64-cup
Good evening chaps,
another unbalanced match: Mephisto Solar King vs Yeno 532XL, with roughly 850 CElo points discrepancy, according to my rating list. So, two points scored by Ulf Rathsman' program. Each time the Solar King is in trouble with threatened pieces, it can play senseless moves just to try avoiding the unavoidable. ![]()
