AW: The 64-cup

Good evening,

To me, the first match of group 6 is reminiscent of the cold war: Mephisto Berlin vs RFT Schachcomputer SC2; western device vs eastern...

Of course with 1000+ CElo difference, plus a 16-biter 68000 facing a 8-biter U880, not to forget a Lang vs a Nelson-based program... what did you expect?

Funny enough, the SC2 commited suicide in both games, displaying a move that enabled mate in one and acknowledging resignation at the very same time (with blinking display and "Matt" LED), even though alternative moves would have delayed the end. Maybe unable to check all legal moves if set to level 2?

AW: The 64-cup

Good afternoon all,

another much unbalanced match: TEC Schachcomputer vs Novag Emerald Classic. Peter Jenning's program MicroChess is an early pioneer in chess computing for microcomputers, while the Emerald Classic benefits from fifteen years or so more development. The TEC can only follow a regular descent under the pressure of the much more accurate moves of the Novag computer. But it is so vintage, with its unique form factor and old-fashioned electronic sounds, a pleasure to play with! The Emerald Classic is strong, but compared to the TEC, lacks attraction.

Hi,

the next match could have been pretty balanced, with two computers belonging to the same category (only about 100 CElo gap between these): Scisys Sensor Chess with SPM vs Vonset / Femuey L6-v1. But the L6 is rather strong from a tactical standpoint, even in this first version, whilst the Sensor Chess can leverage chess skills but is tactically vulnerable. And the Chinese device prevailed, especially during the second game as black, the shortest so far (only 13 moves) in which a naughty trap is set: capture the ennemy Queen at the price of a mate in 2. The Sensor Chess didn't smell the mate threat and fell in the trap.

Hello, good evening all,

the first round is now completed with this last match, and results in clear rankings: the four strongest computers score two points each, and will fight each other next round, and the weakest ones got zero points and will be the second half of the next round. Rightly sorted!

This last match is CXG Super Enterprise vs Scisys Intercontinental Traveler with 540 CElo discrepancy: an easy walk for the Danielsen's 16K program. The level I use is A5+H2, this stands for 15secs/move, standard openings, aggressive playing style.

AW: The 64-cup

Hello,

Today starts with the match TEC Schachcomputer vs VEB RFT Schachcomputer SC2. The outcome is as close as possible to what we could expect, with 1.5 points for the SC2 and half a point for the TEC, but watching the games reveals it happened by chance more than by chess logic. This reminds such devices, if able to play "look-alike" chess in the middlegame, are definitely powerless in the endgame phase.

In the first game, TEC playing as White, the SC2 holds the lead for a while, up to a clearly winning position with a majority of Pawns and promotion prospects, but offers a path to promotion to an ennemy Pawn and neglects pushing forward its own best candidate for promotion on several opportunities. Once up a Queen, the TEC could have won, even reached a simple mate in 2 opportunity but failed to spot it, and the game ends per repetition. At some point, I ceased trying to add symbols or comments to bad moves, as it was getting useless and boring.

The second game with SC2 playing with light pieces has been more straightforward, with main mistakes performed on the TEC side. Nevertheless, the TEC could have attempted a move repetition with good chances the SC2 would have stupidly followed this path. But the TEC chose another move that soon led to a mate.

Hi,

the second match from round 2/group 6 is Scisys Intercontinental Traveler vs Scisys Sensor Chess + SPM. With close to 300 CElo points more for the Sensor Chess, the result is as expected (2 points for the strongest one).

Nevertheless, the games are a bit deceptive, with inaccuracies from the Kaplan program that delayed the expected wins, especially in the second game as White that lasted no less than 72 moves. Worse, at some point in this second game (move 25), the Sensor Chess locks its own King in a mate net... and is lucky the Mike Johnson's program doesn't find the correct move.

AW: The 64-cup

Good morning all,

the top match from group 6 occurs now, during round 2: Novag Emerald Classic vs Mephisto Berlin. According to the respective rankings, the most probable outcome is 0.5 to 1.5 in favor of the Lang program, and that is exactly what happened. As a matter of fact, the Berlin is the first seeded player in this competition that doesn't achieve the full 6 points from its selection tournament.

Both devices rather play on the safe side of style, therefore the first game is balanced without much tactics involved, and ends in a draw. In the second game, the Berlin playing as White slowly builds its lead without obvious mistakes from the Emerald Classic, the only one I could spot being a positional inaccuracy that revealed significant many moves later. Nothing to complain about, from the heir to Kittinger series.

AW: The 64-cup

Hi,

those who consider the Vonset L6 not that welcome (I guess there are some ) will be relieved after this match: the CXG Super Enterprise deserves its 150 or so CElo points more, achieving two wins in a row.

The Danielsen program looks to have better positional skills, mainly in the area of better Pawns management, prone to better development and board center domination. The Super Enterprise can be sometimes inconsistent due to tactical weaknesses, but as the L6 couldn't find some, the best strategy prevailed in the end. Happy end for the Super Enterprise!

AW: The 64-cup

Hi, good morning all,

Two poor dudes with no more than half a point for total score after two rounds, four games, meet now: TEC Schachcomputer and Scisys Intercontinental Traveler.

In the first game as White, the TEC adds a second half-point to its basket.

Now the odds are in favor of the small Scisys, featuring around 120 CElo points advantage, and playing as White in this second game. Yet, it failed to a fork threat from the TEC, which from then plays a Rook up and dominates till the end. Wraping up the win is a bit painful though, the TEC missed five (5 !) match-balls (mate in 1) before conclusion .

Nevertheless, a nice achievement from MicroChess, the Peter Jenning's pioneer, and a deceptive run from the Mike Johnson's program .

AW: The 64-cup

Hello,

in the next match, the Scisys Sensor Chess with SPM provides evidence it deserves the close to 300 CElo points more it owns.

Its opponent is the Schachcomputer SC2. In the first game, as soon as move number 10, the SC2 suffers a Knight fork. Nevertheless it can keep up with the situation until around move 30, leveraging a rather closed position; unfortunately the SC2 opens the game, too subtle a consideration for such a weak device (so, nothing to complain about). A deserved win for the Kaplan/Barnes program.

In the second game, Sensor Chess plays as Black and quickly gets an advantage within its opening book, meaning the error played by the SC2 is stored, and the refutation (not an obvious one) included! Of course, with such an early handicap, the SC2 can't do much in the rest of the game. It nevertheless reaches the endgame with only one Pawn down, but that's enough for a promotion and another win for the Sensor Chess.
