Re: The 64-cup

Hi,

if previous match was unbalanced, what about this one? Nearly 1200 CElo points separate the Vonset / Femuey L6-v2 from the Yeno 320XT... And as far as processor speed is concerned, the L6-v2 is roughly ten thousands times faster... So even spending 0 (yes, zero!!) seconds on the clock for the whole game, whilst the Yeno used 15 secs. average per move, the Vonset just CRUSHED the Yeno. Indeed, this is unfair. But fun!
And I am pretty sure some of you will appreciate watching some games from the fairly unknown Chinese bomber. And of course stronger opponents will be thrown in front of it during the next stages of the competition...

Meanwhile, please be aware the first game is a gem, to my opinion: make sure you watch the final mate, leveraging two sacs in a row: a Rook then a Bishop...

While entering the moves across both computers, I input them on my favorite GUI (to get the PGN tracked) and sometimes activating HIARCS 15.2 live analysis, with four PVs displayed, to better check moves quality (as the standard was far too high for me, Vonset side of course). I noticed most if not all moves from the L6-v2 were always first choice... Therefore once the game completed, I ran a post-mortem analysis for the Vonset/Femuey moves only, using Deep HIARCS 15.2 with 2 threads (of Intel Core-i5 CPU) and 5 secs./move. According to my estimation, the laptop using two threads is about ten times faster than the Vonset; and the analysis engine is over 3.200Elo in CCRL 40/15 list, so fairly able to provide a trusted outcome. Result is included in the PGN data... Chess speaks for itself, as a famous chess player stated ...

Therefore I launched the same post-mortem analysis after the second game; to be honest it does not deserve as much interest as the first one; nevertheless the outcome of the analysis is amazing (for a chess computer, I mean).

Re: The 64-cup

Hi, good morning,

next match is rather classical, between two more or less closely related Fidelity Electronics devices: Champion Sensory Chess Challenger vs Sensory Chess Challenger 9b. Both are powered by a 6502 close to 2Mhz, the 9b born two years later has a slight theoretical edge program-wise. Nevertheless, the Champion deserves its name and is very successful: 2 points!

The first game is rather tactically complex to my eyes; the Champion gets an advantage smartly coordinating two pieces (N+B) while the 9b struggled to defend with its single Rook.

In the second game with opposite castlings, the 9b fails to take enough care of a pending strong attack from the Champion; its own attack it tried to develop on the other side of the board hanged fire.

Re: The 64-cup

Hi,

last game from round 1, group 3 is Fidelity Mini Sensory Chess Challenger with CAC module (Challenger Advanced Chess) vs Novag Chess Champion Super System III.

In the first game, the Novag is far from brilliant, with a very early offer for a fork the little Fidelity device failed to play. The game is then rather balanced (with some edge for the Mini Sensory, though) until an obvious positional blunder from the SSIII, moving its threatened King outside any safety. The Mini Sensory fails to spot a mate in 2 but remains easily winning; unfortunately no code inside prevents repetition and it messes up the full point for a draw.

The second game is not high quality, each device going back and forth according to several mistakes or missed opportunities. In the end a SSIII passed Pawn prevailed; it could have been blocked but the calculation was too much for the puny Mini Sensory.

Therefore, the SSIII scores 1.5 points vs the Mini Sensory 0.5.

Re: The 64-cup

Hello, Schönen Nachmittag Alle,

let's launch round 2 for group 3, starting with two devices currently lacking any point: the Yeno 320XT and the Saitek Calculator Chess. The Yeno is not a strong one, nevertheless its Danielsen's 4K program easily overwhelms the microscopic Calculator Chess: two points for the cheap, low-end Yeno (playing with "normal" style).

Re: The 64-cup

Hello,

this match provides an evidence: the Chess Champion Super System III is a smart teacher!

Actually, it teaches you what you should NOT do.

First game as Black facing the Turbo King II, it teaches you the power of Knight's forks. And as repeating is teaching, it loses its two Rooks the very same way!

Second game as White, it engages a nice (not so much) Queen journey to teach you what under-development can be. Cherry on the cake, it enables another Knight fork, a royal one. Did I mention repeating is teaching?

Re: The 64-cup

Guten Abend Alle,

the last match from round 2 (still group 3) sends the Fidelity Champion Sensory Chess Challenger under the wheels of the Vonset / Femuey L6-v2.

There is no for old champions.

I just cannot understand some hard-to-justify moves from the early Spracklen's Fidelity program (1981): I suspect under tough pressure it can lose good sense (maybe the horizon effect...)

Re: The 64-cup

Hello,

next match is somewhat balanced: Fidelity Mini Sensory Chess Challenger + CAC vs Saitek Calculator Chess, with only 45 CElo points in favor of the Mini Sensory.

First game as White, the Mini Sensory keeps an edge for twenty moves or so; even with a couple of opportunities to get significantly better. But it failed twice to find the good move, and soon performed a mistake. Anyway a nice performance from the tiny Calculator Chess, winner as Black despite its Elo handicap.

In the second game, the Calculator Chess as White cannot renew this performance, with less than a dozen moves keeping the game approximately balanced. It is then a long journey for the Mini Sensory to achieve the win.

1 point each!

Re: The 64-cup

Hi,

another easy match for the Fidelity Sensory Chess Challenger 9b, facing now the Novag Chess Champion Super System III.

Easy? Not so much, in the first game playing with light pieces, the Sensory 9b can only nibble at small advantages along the game, before promoting a Pawn on move 55. The CCSS III has been a good sparring partner, playing with dark pieces!

In the second game, on another hand, the CCSS III only resists 25 moves before inexplicably blundering. Indeed an easy win in 33 moves for the Sensory 9.

Re: The 64-cup

Good evening all,
now the Fidelity Champion Sensory Chess Challenger encounters the Yeno 320XT.

I trust the first game is a nice demonstration of the horizon effect: after a balanced series of moves, the Yeno performs a mistake that should cost it a Knight (3 points, so).

Well, instead of acknowledging that, it sacrifices a Rook for a Bishop. I strongly suspect the 2 points loss from this operation were considered a better option, assuming the 3 points loss has been pushed beyond the calculation horizon.

And the next move is again a sacrifice, a Bishop for a Pawn. Again a 2 points loss "avoiding" the pending loss of 3 points.

Unfortunately, that only postponed the unavoidable initial loss of a piece; therefore a total material loss of 2+2+3=7 points!! Then, of course, the Champion knows how to win.

The next game with Yeno as White is quickly decided, the Yeno blundered as soon as move 18, enabling an easy mate in 2.

Two points for the Champion.
