AW: The 64-cup

Round 1 for group 1 is now completed. Last match was Fidelity Sensory Chess Challenger 8 vs Novag Citrine, another very unbalanced match with a +700 CElo gap.

Sensory 8 with white pieces lets two black minor pieces prowl close to its uncastled King; when the black Queen joins the kill, it is soon all over...

... and playing Black, it already commits two errors within the first ten moves, the game is soon hopeless...

AW: The 64-cup

Mephisto Mein erster and Mephisto Mirage start the round 2 for group 1. Would the small Mein erster manage to get a draw? Sorry no, the Mirage rules and scores 2 points.

Mein erster playing white blunders as soon as the tenth move, unaware of a forking threat by the Mirage's Knight. It really is blind to such forks, at least when playing at this pace (default level h3=15 seconds/move). The Mirage plays rather methodically then, towards the win, just a matter of technique.

On the return game, a nice performance from the Mein erster: ahead with dark pieces, as far as material is concerned, up to move 29: a Knight for two Pawns. It then lets the Mirage get initiative, penetrate the position with a Rook and remove a couple of exposed Mein erster's Pawns. The Mirage's own Pawns get much stronger than the Mein erster's Knight, marching for queening.

AW: The 64-cup

Conchess Escorter now faces Fidelity Sensory Chess Challenger 8. From their relative strength standpoint, Sensory 8 should be able to get half a point from this match.

This did not happen. First game is a lengthy one, 81 moves. The Conchess gets the lead once reaching early middlegame, but gives back this advantage in late middlegame, thru a - non that obvious - tactical error. The Conchess builds again an advantage, slowly overwhelming the Sensory 8 in the endgame phase.

In the next game, Sensory 8 plays white, and takes a lead in the 20th to 30th moves. This is all messed up after a couple of positional errors; and the Escorter prevails. 2 points for the Conchess.

AW: The 64-cup

Hi all,

third match, round 2 of group 1: how will the mighty Centaur spank the Beluga, proud of its 1.5 score so far?

1st game, Beluga playing as black commits a small positional error, merciless exploited by the Centaur.

In the second (short!) game, the Beluga wrongly opened the position on Queen side while its King wasn't castled; the Centaur achieves a strong attack completed with a nice move the Beluga didn't expect: it resigned on the fly .

AW: The 64-cup

First surprise happened in the fourth match, round 2 of group 1: Novag Citrine and Systema Challenge shared a point each, they both won as white! This is despite the 200 CElo (or so) gap in favor of the Citrine...

It is well known they are both on the passive side of the playing style, therefore the games were lengthy ones (80 moves on average). The first game with Citrine as white player is rather balanced until move 50, where the Challenge commits the error that will turn the game to the Citrine's advantage.
The second game with the Systema Challenge (playing as white) is nicely balanced until move 20, even with a slight positional lead by the Challenge who has a stronger hand on the center of the board, to my opinion. On move 21, the Citrine commits an inaccuracy (not sure this can be evaluated as an error, I spent some time analyzing before understanding the issue with the Citrine's move, and what alternate better moves to play). The Challenge did spot the correct next move, and slowly but safely won. The Citrine stubbornly never resigned (sometimes it does...)

AW: The 64-cup

Hi,
now starts the third round for group 1, with the two weakest devices: Fidelity Sensory Chess Challenger 8 and Mephisto Mein erster. With 16 CElo difference in my ranking list, the match should be balanced.

The first game is indeed balanced during 55 moves, without blatant errors from any of the computers: well done from both! Then, in a difficult endgame for those small 4K programs (the Mephisto features a 8K ROM, but half part for the Zen program and half for training exercises), a wrong move from the Sensory 8 (white) provides an additional passed pawn to the Mein erster, which fails to convert the game to a win.

The second game is pure domination by the Mein erster as white. The Sensory 8 played ugly chess in the opening, moving its Queen during 6 out of its 10 first moves! Needless to say, it was under-developped ... But that was not enough, it also lost a Knight after moving it to a fork-vulnerable square. Later in the game, the Sensory 8 blunders and loses a Rook, in addition to the Knight . The endgame should have been a piece of cake for the Mein erster, overwhelming the Sensory 8 with a Queen, a Rook and two Pawns against a single opponent Pawn to support the King. It's a pity it lacks sufficient algorithms to handle such an easy mate process and prevent repetitions .

So the match was rather unbalanced, but the score ended balanced as expected: one point each after two draws.

AW: The 64-cup

Eric

AW: The 64-cup

Hi guys,
here occurs an outcome that was to be expected: Novag Beluga gets 1.5 points from its fight with Mephisto Mirage.

First game is balanced, without significant errors from both, and ends as a draw with an agreed repetition of positions .

Second game is as well balanced for a while, then the Mirage playing dark pieces blunders on move 19 . The Beluga mates only five moves later.
