Re: The 64-cup

Vonset L6 v2 all 32 levels are instant play. Not even 1 second thinking. Imagine what that machine can do if it had normal time controls.

I am guessing they have at least 3 engines running.

Engine 1 for levels 1 to 10 - ply limited accordingly
Engine 2 for levels 11 to 20 - ply limited accordingly
Engine 3 for levels 21 to 31 - ply limited accordingly
Strongest engine for Level 32 with unlocked ply

This is my theory. I can't see any other way to have increasing strength curve from L1 to L32 and instant play all the time.

AW: The 64-cup

Hi,

next match features Systema Challenge vs Millenium The King Performance.
If the Challenge looks rather good when playing opponents from the same or so strength, it provides evidences of obvious weaknesses playing the King Performance. Saying obvious, I mean mistakes I could immediately spot as a mediocre chess player. I let you check the games.

AW: The 64-cup

Hello, good morning to all,

last match from quarter-final phase is a Lang family affair: smart vs fast, Mephisto Berlin vs Millenium Chess Genius Pro.

In the first game as White, the Berlin can only play two moves out of its openings library before being forced to computing by the CGP (for information, I let the default setting, thus book 2 which is the big modern "HIARCS" book).
Surprisingly enough, I was able to instantly spot a positional mistake from the Berlin, on move #39. I am not used to positional mistakes performed by this Lang program (a Vancouver in disguise), and further more not used to be able to see these by myself. Maybe I am not so bad at chess? ok, dream off . Anyway, the rest of the game provides later evidence this positional error was a bad mistake: the involved Knight won't anymore be any useful to the Berlin, compelled to resignation.

The revenge game is balanced, with a center kept closed for a while; once some pieces exchanges are performed the position is slightly in favor of the CGP. Thus, the Berlin plays for a draw and achieves a 3-fold repetition.

The outcome is 1.5 to 0.5 in favor of the fast Chess Genius Pro.

AW: The 64-cup

Good evening to all,

In the first semifinal match, the first two games are a near miss for the Centaur: the L6-v2 has been very close to an unexpected win!

As I am fully overwhelmed with the chess playing level, I shall provide insights from an engine analysis (Deep HIARCS 15.2, 4 threads, 5 secs/move).

After fifteen moves in the first game, despite playing as Black, the L6 already has an edge; and on move #16 the Centaur commits a mistake, soon followed by another one on move #17 with still an inaccuracy to come next move. That's more than enough for the L6 to dominate the rest of the game, and score one point.

Next game, the Centaur plays strongly as Black and gets an edge, but a small mistake on move #39 lets the game return to a balanced situation. There is a smell of a draw game for close to 40 additional moves; the Centaur has no more control onto the outcome of this match: a draw would have meant a 1.5 to 0.5 victory for the L6!! Of course I let both devices play to the bitter end; and bitter it will be: the L6 blunders, no half-decent human player would have committed such an obviously losing move!

One point each, so we are to play at least two more games; in the first one as White the Centaur plays very strong chess whilst the L6 commits a bunch of mistakes and never stands a foot on the ground. The fourth and last game is slightly less strong from the Centaur playing with the dark pieces; but strong enough to achieve the final win, and 3 to 1 score.

Therefore, the Centaur is happy (and somewhat lucky) to reach the final "boss" level.

AW: The 64-cup

Hello,

second half of the semifinal features two Millenium devices, The King Performance and the Chess Genius Pro (first generation).

A word about books settings: with the new generation CGP arrival, several test games were played in this forum; and from the discussions it appeared as a consensus the classic (London) book fits better this device, assuming playing strength is expected more than variety. Well, I shall not turn a deaf ear to this argument; I used the modern HIARCS book so far in this 64-cup, but for the serious games to come I'll switch to book 1 setting (classic, London book).
By the way, the setting for The King Performance in this cup is/was/will stay as Aegon'94 as first book, plus Master as secondary one; thus with both priority to classical openings and ability to answer correctly modern ones, should the opponent play these.

And yes, ECO mode is off for the CGP (means pondering is on).

In the first game, CGP playing Black side commits a (small) mistake on move #8, that's enough for the KP to rule the rest of the game and score a first point as White.

In the second game, the KP playing with the dark pieces has an edge over the CGP during around 60 moves, then the edge vanishes and the 100+ moves game finally ends in a long expected draw. Well done from the CGP, but of course not sufficient to reach the final.

AW: The 64-cup

Good evening,

now we reach the trophies phase; starting with the secondary final that should grant the bronze cup to the third place.

Contenders are Vonset / Femuey L6-v2 and Millenium Chess Genius Pro.

L6 plays first, and is definitely on fire!
It simply teaches the CGP how strong storming Pawns can be!!
As soon as opposite castlings happens, it launchs its King'side Pawns forward and sounds the charge. At move #18, all CGP pieces huddle together on the Queen'side, whilst the L6 threat on King'side is patent, not only due to the advancing Pawns but as well due to the several pieces able to threaten the CGP King shelter. According to HIARCS analysis, the L6 moves are very accurate, and the CGP quickly loses.

The second game with CGP now playing as White lasts somewhat longer; nevertheless the L6 quickly cancels White's advantage and gets an edge. Again it plays much accurately, reaches the endgame two Pawns up, then soon a third Pawn up, and game soon over for the CGP.

Vonset / Femuey L6-v2 wins 2-0 and is granted the bronze cup!

AW: The 64-cup

good evening,

now time's up for the final match!
It is of course DGT Centaur vs Millenium The King Performance. Theoretical odds are about 10 to 1 in favor of the Centaur... and indeed the King Performance can't do much, and loses. It plays rather solid chess in both games, offering constant resistance, nevertheless slowly but surely losing some ground along with the accurate moves of the Centaur. I can't spot any brilliant attack: just cold, patient and safe Centaur moves, "à la Lang"...

AW: The 64-cup

Good morning,

the Consolation tournament has already been designed, step by step, including the chess computers that, time ago, reached third place of each selection group.

But after the climax of previous semifinal and final games, maybe worth reminding who the contenders are (grouped by match to play):
Code:
Novag Beluga (1701)
Mephisto Rebell 5 (1816)

Saitek Turbo King II (1888)
Tiger Grenadier (1855)

Mephisto Maestro Travel (1561)
CXG Super Enterprise (1684)

Mephisto II (1426)
Fidelity Designer Mach III Master 2265 (2044)
This consolation cup is played by elimination, complying with the same process as the main cup (even number of games until a winner emerges).

MfG,
Tibono

AW: The 64-cup

Hi, good evening,

here is the first match of the Consolation cup, direct quarter-final stage: Novag Beluga vs Mephisto Rebell 5. It has been a tight match, as no less than three rounds, thus six games, were required to name a winner.

Both two first games were draw ones by referee assesment.

In the first game, Rebell 5 as Black player is up a Pawn in the late endgame, but its Pawn is on the a-file with the Beluga's King on its path. Other pieces are a Bishop for the Beluga and a Knight for the Rebell. Should the Rebell's Pawn threaten a promotion, the Bishop would be sacrificed, and the game would end in a draw due to unsufficient material. No way for a win...

In the second game, Rebell 5 playing White reaches a winning endgame position, leveraging a nice chain of three advanced Pawns. But the position is closed, and the plan to unlock the win is way out of reach from the Rebell . Therefore, only pieces shuffling happens until referee decision for a drawn game.

Third game, Rebell Black commits an early mistake on move #10, and the smart Beluga finds the strong counter-move . The Rebell will never recover: the Beluga plays accurate enough to home the first win.

Fourth game, with White pieces Rebell is committed for a win, otherwise leave the consolation cup. Maybe motivation rules, as it dominates the whole game and scores the required point to stay alive.

Fifth game could have been close to a win for the Beluga playing as White, yet it doesn't spot the winning move and, being a Pawn down, choses to repeat position. It is now vulnerable to a potential win from the Rebell 5, that will play as White next game...

And Rebell 5 shows a good finish, never letting the Beluga playing Black really stand a safe foot on the ground, thanks to both a better structure of Pawns and more active long range guns (pair of Bishops and Rooks).

Match score is therefore 3.5 to 2.5 in favor of the Rebell 5.
