AW: The 64-cup

Good afternoon to everyone,

now a match with some fair chances both sides: Novag Constellation Expert vs Saitek/Mephisto Chess Challenger 10Mhz. That's roughly 1/3 to 2/3 odds...

The first game with Constellation Expert playing White is a nice one, very seriously played by the Kittinger protégé. It kept an edge for 30 moves or so, before demonstrating how advanced Knights can shake a position . As a result, a mighty Pawns majority, and advanced ones on top of that, on Queen side. The Mephisto Chess Challenger is compelled to sacrifice a Bishop + a Rook to stop these, and game over .

The second game looks the other way around, with the Morsch program being up all game long. The fall of the Constellation Expert speeds up after a tentative to attack the ennemy King that looks under PSH influence, but not that a relevant one. Here, PSH surely stands for "Passt Sicher Halbwegs"

Well, shared score, lets go for another couple of games.

Despite playing White again, the Constellation Expert stays on par only 15 moves or so, then loses an edge, and loses more starting from around move 20. Not a great game from the Expert, now led 1 to 2 points.

In the revenge game, the lead is almost constantly on the White side (Saitek/Mephisto Chess Challenger) except for several periods where the Constellation Expert had opportunities to aim for a draw, using checking repetitions (Queen against exposed ennemy King). Despite not fully leveraging these chances, the Expert is lucky enough (or strong enough) to re-enter a final drawing sequence and save half a point .

Final score is 2.5 to 1.5, winner is the Chess Challenger, so moving up to quarter-final.

The Constellation Expert leaves the competition, it has been a real pleasure to operate this so nice device running an interesting chess program.

AW: The 64-cup

Good evening,

next match is another unbalanced one: Vonset / Femuey L6-v2 vs Novag Emerald Classic. Theoretical odds are 95/5 in favor of the Chinese bomber. Said another way, one should play 20 games to get a chance for the Novag to score 1 point.
Well, as expected the L6-v2 scores two points from this match, and deserves its invitation card for the quarter-final.

Not much to comment about: in both games, the Emerald Classic is meritorious with 20 moves or so resistance before going down and later resigning .

AW: The 64-cup

Hi, good afternoon to everybody,

fourth match from 1/8th final is Mephisto Milano v2.00 (a Milano box with a Nigel Short ROM inside) vs CT800 1.42.

As the relative rankings suggest, no much trouble for the Chess 'T800' to terminate the humans -sorry, my bad- terminate the Schröder program and score two points.

Well, in the first game though, the 'Nigel Short' defends itself as White with stamina: fifty moves or so resistance, before going down in twenty additional moves.

For the CT800 playing as White, fifteen moves were enough to dominate, and twice as much to force the Milano into resignation.

AW: The 64-cup

Good morning,

a rather balanced match now, with roughly 44/56 odds between Tandy Chess Champion 2150 and Systema Challenge.

I am rather happy with the Challenge's first game; it plays (as Black) with initiative, space gain, and advances a Pawn that will put enough pressure on the CC2150 to make it lose.

The second game is somewhat harder from the Challenge standpoint until middlegame, as the Tandy pushes back efficiently and controls space. Then the Chess Champion 2150 commits a mistake that will cost it entering the early endgame a Bishop and a Pawn down. Looks like a game over, as on top of that the Challenge can push a Pawn to promotion, reaching two Queens and a Bishop vs a single Queen. Fatal error, the tempo used to promote lets the ennemy Queen enter a checking repetition series, and the Challenge stupidly jettisons half a point.

Nevertheless, scoring 1.5 to 0.5, the Systema Challenge deserves a place into the quarter-final. Despite leaving the cup here, overall a successful competition from the Tandy 2150.

AW: The 64-cup

Hi,

now the Saitek/Mephisto "Chess Challenger" tuned to 32Mhz has to play the Millenium "The King Performance". With close to 390 CElo less (that's about 1 to 9 odds), the "Challenger" deserves its name and won't be much more than a sparring partner .

The first game is an endurance test for both, lasting 88 moves. Not really worth the replay, you can save your time.

The second one is more interesting, a shorter one, and the Chess Challenger playing as Black castles long. That is an opportunity for the H8 bug to occur later on, and it actually happened! I was immediately alerted, as the Chess Challenger moved instantly its Rook from the h8 square after an ennemy move it had little chances for having pondered about it. Bingo, the move is a mistake. The Chess Challenger was already dominated, therefore I doubt the outcome of this game would have not been a loss, anyway. No big an influence on the match, so.

For fun and for information, once the game has been completed, I set the position up and let the Chess Challenger move: it plays the same Rook move, instantly. No pondering could have been involved after a position setup, thus indeed a H8 bug occurrence. I also used my trick to identify the move it would have computed, assuming no H8 bug: setup the position one half move before and White to move; make the White move obvious or forced, enable the rotating display of variation to ply2 (+rd:2) and let the Chess Challenger think the appropriate time.
In this case, I used this position:
with a honey-pot Queen to be captured. White move is of course NxQ displayed as ply 1; and ply 2 displayed by the thinking Chess Challenger is Nf5 instead of Rg8.

First time the H8 bug appears during the 64-cup (18 games played so far by either Chess Challenger, standard or tuned; and two more games to come, as the standard device will play quarter-final games; and is assumed not to survive these).

Hello, good afternoon to all,

7th match in this 1/8th final is an easy one for the Mephisto Berlin, facing the venerable, 10+ years older, Fidelity Champion Sensory Chess Challenger: two wins in a row. None of these games reach 40 moves.
Nevertheless, respect for the Champion Sensory, which found its way to the 1/8th final, amongst sixteen out of sixty four chess computers. Kudos!

Good morning,

last match from 1/8th final is Yeno 532XL against Millenium Chess Genius Pro (the 2016 elder).

With 460+ CElo leap, odds are roughly 14/1 in favor of the CGP. In the first game, despite playing as Black, it is on the attacking side: constantly pushing back the Rathman's program, compelled to play within its own half-board.

During the second game, the Yeno resists fourty moves or so before collapsing and leaving the competition.

Hi,

the quarter-final phase is now ready to play:
Code:
DGT Centaur (2919)
Mephisto Chess Challenger 10Mhz (2032)

Vonset / Femuey L6-v2 (2496)
CT800 1.42 (2291)

Systema Challenge (1802)
Millenium The King Performance (2527)

Mephisto Berlin (2181)
Millenium Chess Genius Pro (2303)
Teaser: the tighest match should be the last one, Berlin vs CGP. Let's wait for it. Another interesting one: will the L6-v2 deserve its ~200 CElo more, facing the strong CT800?
I am afraid the two other ones are much predictable... We shall see that soon.

MfG,
Tibono

Good afternoon,

Quarter-final starts with the match DGT Centaur vs Mephisto Chess Challenger 10Mhz.

A good first game as Black for the Saitek/Mephisto Morsch, it can sustain a balanced game for 30 moves or so. Then, all the Centaur pieces are dedicated to attacking whilst all the Chess Challenger ones are committed to defend. Of course, based on such an Elo difference, this could not last long and the Centaur prevails.

The second game is rather a miniature one, as the Chess Challenger blunders on move #11 - I myself immediately felt the high danger it put itself into. Lack of depth search? I would rather say a lack of skills... It deservedly quits the competition.

AW: The 64-cup

Good night all,

the Chinese bomber L6 v2 teaches the CT800 what chess is all about
60 moves are enough to crush it twice!!

In the first game playing White, the L6-v2 shows how to dominate the center, gain space, open lines and coordinate attacking pieces, all aimed at the ennemy King's corner. A real show of force! I knew it plays very strong chess, but up to spank the CT800 in such a way, I didn't guess it. Much impressive!

The second game starts balanced for the CT800 now playing as White, on par for roughly 20 to 25 moves. Then the L6 plays a Pawn move that looks rather minor but actually enables a thundering threat onto the poor CT800 King, unsufficiently sheltered. The CT800 fails to immediately provide additional support, and collapses.

A couple of facts to be reminded, about the L6-v2:
- it is a dedicated chess computer, not to be confused with some boards requiring a remote engine on a powerful smartphone or PC;
- each and every move is played instantly
