Re: H8 Bug

Hi,
I agree the decision should depend on the context: during any tournament, a blunder is a blunder, whether a known bug or not. Play to the end unless resignation is obvious.

If the game is part of a dedicated process for level of play evaluation, anything can be decided assuming it is clearly stated in the outcome.

I can confirm a cold start and position setup is useless to hope for another move than a previously occurred H8 bug.

There is a workaround, somewhat cumbersome, I already explained it (but I can't remember where I did). The "bug move" is usually (if not always) played instantly, it doesn't result from any convenient search. OK, let's trigger a real search:

- the main idea is: take back and edit the position to let the buggy Saitek program play the opponent's side, making sure the resulting position after Saitek's move will be the expected one that occurred just before the H8 bug move.
Sometimes it can be very natural, just swap sides after taking back the full move (2 plies) and the Saitek may play the same as its opponent previously did.
Otherwise, leveraging edit mode, you can do what you want to easily get this result, such as add an extra Queen to be captured for free (honey pot!), making sure the Saitek will play the expected move, in order to reach the wanted position.

- Let the Saitek move. Once done, assuming the display options are convenient (principal variation info on, move 1 for predicted line of play is displayed) you can now read the non-buggy computed move the Saitek would consider best. Wait for the granted thinking time to make sure you get it right, then just play this move on behalf of the Saitek.
The rest is easy: cancel/take back (one ply) the extra move the Saitek just played instead of you, recover the correct turn to play (your's, opponent's), and resume game.

MfG,
Tibono

post-scriptum: the main idea is correct, but the process I wrote here above (from my memory) needs a fix: there is no rotating display while the Saitek waits for your move. The correct solution requires temporarily setting the infinite level and let the Saitek think about the "honey pot" move (infinite level to avoid too short a thinking time, as the move is by design a very tempting one). And of course the display you need is PV2, the second move from the predicted line of play. You already know the PV1, you designed the position for it.
