The LCD clocks are write-only. In fact, Turbo 16K vs Companion III (and Conquistador vs Team Mate) play identical, other than the different CPU speed. They have the same ROM.

It is kind of like Fidelity's Excellence and Excellence Display, Excellence Voice, where they sold a basic version, and an expanded version, using the same ROM.
