Below is wrong, sorry:
If yours is a real R40 (to clarify: one that says "TASC R40" in the system info), it should work ok with 1MB RAM since that was its default hardware configuration.
*edit* to clarify further: if you or the seller you purchased it from upgraded the 2.2 R40 using the 2.5 R30 ROMs, it means it will only use 128KB prg RAM.
I'm unsure whether or not R40 2.5 ROMs exist.
