no, the colours are defined in the internal layout files (different for each device) which are compiled into the MessChess.exe.
The only way to change these colors is to use an external artwork file - there you can define the colors you want, but of course this would have to be done for each single engine.

You mean the ZIPed .lay files (not .cfg), don't you?
Yes, that's the way it was done for CB-Emu, and also MessChess/MessExtra would need such external artworks, if you want to change anything.
But it's not possible to use layouts of CB-Emu for MessChess, because they usually are NOT compatible.
